Join us for the 14th Austin Asche Oration in Law and Governance.

Now in its 14th year, the Austin Asche Oration in Law and Governance is a flagship annual event held in honour of the Hon. Austin Asche AC QC, recognising his outstanding service to the Northern Territory and his contributions to law, education and the community. The Oration brings leading thinkers to the Territory to explore some of the most pressing issues at the intersection of law, democracy and society.

This year, we welcome Lydia Khalil as our distinguished speaker. Lydia is Program Director of the Transnational Challenges Program at the Lowy Institute and leads the Digital Threats to Democracy Project. A recognised authority on governance, technology and national security, she offers deep insight into the challenges facing modern democracies.

Her oration, Democracy and its Discontents, explores how digital polarisation, disinformation and rising extremism are reshaping democratic systems.

Lydia is also a Senior Research Fellow at Deakin University’s Alfred Deakin Institute, co-convener of the AVERT Research Network and author of Rise of the Extreme Right. Her previous roles include senior positions with the US Department of Defense, NYPD and the Council on Foreign Relations.
